Tartan In 2010
2010 really is the moment that tartan is set to explode on the catwalk and the high street. While tartan has always been well loved by those with Scottish Heritage around the world it's presence on the high street will see lots of tartan converts.
We all know tartan is worn to express affinity to a particular clan or family or simply to show you pride in your Scottish heritage. It's also interesting to see its popularity over time in fashion and celebrity circles. as well as coats, kilts and tops there is also tartan make up. Leading make up artists MAC are getting in on the tartan trend with their new tartan themed collection which features tartan products and packaging. The range will be available in the UK from November this year.
Tartan has been used by some of the most admired designers; Jeffrey Banks, Alexander McQueen, Ralph Lauren, Henry Holland and at fashion houses; Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Comme des Garçons and Burberry.
Vivienne Westwood has probably done more for tartan than any other designer - embracing the plaid extensively in her collections. Lochcarron of Scotland, who wove much of the tartan she used, created a special design for her called the 'McAndreas' - after her second husband, Andreas Kronthaler.
In 2001 Jean Paul Gautier designed a kilt for Madonna's world tour, he has also been a keen advocate of kilts in his men's collections. For his Autumn/Winter 1988 collection Gaultier again attempted to dismantle clichés of masculine styling by once more creating a skirt for men; and in 1993, responding to the popularity of kilts amongst gay men on the streets of London and New York, his Vikings collection included his reinvention of the skirt for men in the form of the kilt.
Gaultier helped to popularise the kilt by wearing one on his Channel 4 show, Eurotrash.
Coty award-winning designer Jeffrey Banks worked closely with a number of Scottish fabric mills to design his own tartans.
Katie Holmes, Mischa Barton, Kate Moss, Robbie Williams and Travis' lead singer Fran Healy are just few of stars who have highlighted tartans fashion potential.
The Scottish Fashion Awards, which celebrate their fifth year this year, showcase the talent in Scottish fashion and help to highlight the achievements of Scotland fashion industry.
If you are interested in introducing tartan into your wardrobe read on for some tips on how to put together your look.
Tartan is a popular choice on the high street from jackets to skirts and blouses to tights and accessories. If you're feeling more daring why not mix and match your tartans. Kilts, especially those made from 100% wool, are a great choice for winter and look great with chunky boots and wool tights. Delicate pieces such as tartan bella corsets will work well all year worn as they are in the summer or with a top underneath when it's colder.
If you want to play it safe stick to a single plaid piece per outfit; the secret is to mix the plaid with the plain. Tartans are traditionally woven from several different colours, choose a complementary shade which works. for example the Royal Stewart tartan which has a lot of red in it looks good worn with red or black; solid greens and red as well as black will work well with many tartans.
If you're more daring try different pieces in mis-matching plaid and tartan patterns.
Scottish Highland shops are a great place to buy you tartan wear with a great selection to fit a range of budgets! So why not get pretty in plaid. When buying tartan garments check the wool content! When choosing a tartan item opt for something that's 100% wool so you can be sure it will last and keep you cosy over winter - try to go for high wool content, most reputable highland wear shops offer 100% wool items which will keep your toasty as well as lasting for many seasons!
