How Honda came to be the Most Popular Car in Pakistan

Honda’s introduction into the Pakistani car market created quite a stir some twenty five or so odd years ago. Heads turned on streets when a Honda passed by and car buyers desired to own the Civic or Accord even if it cost them a bit more. Where other car manufacturers offered basic features and practical shapes, Honda offered more luxury, trims and top-notch designs year after year.

Toyota was the market leader in the Pakistani automotive market in terms of loyalty and sales, long before Honda ever came on the scene. It had strategically introduced several models to capture several segments of the market with well known brands like the Crown, Mark II, Corona and the beloved Corolla. Other car manufacturers like Mazda, Suzuki, Nissan, Mercedes and Fiat, though no where near Toyota’s reach and sales, had a few models available for car buyers as well.

Honda’s cars had trims and features, which other car manufacturers, competing in similar consumer segments, did not have at the time. Honda offered extra luxury like power windows and a power steering at a reasonable price to the consumer. Several corporations that had previously preferred to buy Toyota for their executives were now buying Hondas. The different models grew in visibility and created quite a buzz in the car industry.

Honda stayed ahead of the competition with its consistency and fine design and craftsmanship. It was the first car in its class in Pakistan to offer an open interior  and fabric seats. Both these features provided consumers with more comfort and enjoyment while traveling between and within cities. After successfully establishing its brand, Honda took on it’s strongest competitor, the Toyota Corolla, by introducing a similar sized engine model called City with better features and design. To control prices in the future, Honda soon began local production of its cars in collaboration with a locally well-recognized firm.

Honda’s attention to detail and high standard engineering earned it a reputation of a reliable and fuel-efficient car. The powerful, well-designed engines provided drivers with a feeling of riding a bigger car, adding more value to their purchase. Due to their low maintenance and durability, the demand for used Hondas sky rocketed and drove the resale prices closer to those obtained by Toyotas and especially the Corolla. Unlike other cars, which depreciated significant in value, Honda was being resold at higher prices.

Honda has proved itself to be a well-rounded, highly popular car time after time in a relatively short period of time. An enjoyable car to drive, with impressive handling and dramatic appearances, the Honda has repeatedly managed to impress car buyers despite efforts by competitors to introduce new models and makes to the market. Honda’s incredible past record is a sign of its future dominance in Pakistan’s automotive industry, a well deserved position for years to come.
