Schemes Designed To Help Leather Sector Stride Ahead

The Indian leather sector is likely to achieve the desired growth levels in the coming days thanks to the efforts undertaken by the Union government to promote the sector's development through initiation of several schemes. The government's decision to implement three sub-schemes for the progress of the leather industry has spelled good news for small-scale units dominating the sector. Three sub-schemes for leather sector With a view to empower SME leather units and address the challenge of availability of manpower for the sector, three sub-schemes under Indian Leather Development Programme (ILDP) are set to be implemented by the Central Government during the Eleventh Five Year Plan. While issuing a written reply to Lok Sabha as a press release, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, minister of state for commerce and industry, stated, "Grants-in-aid will be provided by the Central government under ILDP for implementation of three sub-schemes and an outlay of Rs 253.43 crore has been allocated for the implementation of Integrated Development of Leather Sector (IDLS)." Under the sub-scheme, support will be extended to small-scale leather units in the form of investment grant at the rate of 30%, while a grant of 20% will be made available for non-SME leather units up to Rs 50 lakh. However, grant above Rs 50 Lakh within the ceiling of Rs 2 crore will be provided as assistance at a rate of 20%. "Financial support in the form of grants-in-aid will help SME leather units to fund their expansion and viable investment projects," said H Singhania, proprietor of Just Leathers, a mid-sized leather company in Kolkata. Industry players are hopeful that the implementation of three sub-schemes will help in addressing some major challenges facing the SME leather units, thereby also leading to the overall growth of the sector.
