Using the Colour Blue in Home Decorating

Since blue is a favorite colour for most people, it is a popular colour choice when it comes to home decorating. Because there is a seemingly endless variety of shades of blue, ranging from pale and subtle, to deep and rich, to bold and vibrant, the only problem is deciding which shade to use. Names for the color blue include azure, baby, beryl, cerulean, cobalt, cornflower, cyan, indigo, midnight, navy, robin's egg, royal, sapphire, sky and slate. Color is the easiest way to change the look and feel of a room. This is because different shades of a colour can inspire different feelings and convey different moods. Traditionally speaking, blue is a colour that projects a feeling of confidence, importance, richness and stability, while, at the same time, being soothing, harmonious and calming. Blue is also associated with nature seeing that it is the color of the sky and water. It can also be found in flowers like bluebells and delphiniums.

Blue can be used in many different ways. It can be the major focal point of the room when used on the walls, or it can be used sparingly in accent pieces like pillows, rugs, draperies, bed linens or decorative accessories. All of the walls can be painted or just one single wall can be blue for dramatic effect. Wallpaper seems to lend itself well to the colour blue. A navy blue and white pinstripe can be very business-like or very dramatic, depending on how wide the stripes are on the wallpaper. A blue and white toile pattern, not only in wallpaper, but in bed linens, draperies or throw pillows, can add a sense of history to a room. Blue floral patterned wallpaper can look especially nice in a small powder room or in the bedroom.

For a rich, moneyed look, use a deep, royal blue on the walls of a home office or den. When used as a backdrop against tall mahogany bookshelves, the result is quite impressive. Shades of sky blue and robin's egg blue tend to work well in bedrooms since it produces a soothing, calming effect. A medium hued blue is notoriously used in the bedroom of young boys. Navy blue can be considered a neutral since it is sometimes hard to distinguish from black. For this reason, it lends itself well to many combinations.

Of course, not everything in a room will be blue. As a result, different color combinations will produce various results. The use of blue and white is a classic choice for a country style, nautical theme or an old world European style. However, it can look exceptionally chic on the walls when paired with cool modern furniture pieces in a crisp white. Modern living room furniture with metallic silver legs set in a room with walls that are a dark slate or steel blue can create a sleek, ultra-hip environment.

Blue and green conjure up feelings of the sea shore and can be a very serene combination. In a dining room filled with windows and natural light, blue and green glass pieces will sparkle and look enchanting. Blue and yellow tile in a kitchen creates a sunny, inviting atmosphere in which to cook a meal or read the newspaper. Light shades of blue also work well when combined with neutral shades like brown and camel. If contrast is the goal, then combine blue with a bold red or orange. This would be a brilliant choice for a children's playroom.

The key to mixing blue with other colours is to keep them in the same tone or hue. For instance, when using green and blue, keep both colours in either soothing, paler shades or deep, rich shades, otherwise they can look incompatible. For the ultimate in sophistication, use three shades of blue together to create a monochromatic look. This will give a real depth to any room without being jarring.

With so many divergent hues, blue is the ideal colour for use in home decorating. Whichever shade, or shades, of blue are chosen, keep in mind that light shades tend to look airy and cool shades tend to expand a space. On the other hand, dark shades tend to create an intimate feeling and warm shades seem to advance and make a space appear smaller. Natural light, as well as artificial light, can alter the appearance of a colour, so keep that in mind when decorating the home.
