How to Be Well-Dressed: From Your Socks to Your Panerai Watch

Every gentleman has to look the part. And when it comes down to it, we all pay attention to details. So here are nine tips for fashion success.

1. Suit: Every man must own a suit. Every gentleman should have three. A black one, a blue one, and a gray or alternate style, such as a double breasted, to look good.

2. Shoes: The same goes with shoes. A black pair and a brown pair are important. You cannot combine black shoes with a blue suit. You should also match your belt with your shoes. Do not buy cheap shoes. They will be noticeable. Better to buy a moderately expensive pair and wear them every day than two cheap pairs that look it.

3. Shirts: Solid colors, like white and blue, are very professional and are good for work. Striped shirts are also formal, checkered shirts and pastel colored shirts are more appropriate for the weekend.

4. Luxury Watch: Your watch is an important expression of your personality. It shows that you have a schedule and you know what time it is. These may seem like trivial characteristics, but they reflect a powerful man. The brand of your watch is also important. 5. Ties: Diagonally striped ties make good formal wear. While tie fashions often go in and out of style in terms of design and size, a classic tie is not too wide, nor too skinny, and has deep, rich colors. The half Windsor is a fine knot to know.

6. Jackets: You should invest in a blue and a black blazer, a camel coat or tweed jacket for winter, and a linen, khaki or seersucker jacket for summer.

7. Haircut: A short, clean-cut hairstyle will win you points when meeting people for the first time. Get it cut every 4-6 weeks to preserve the shape.

8. Casual: Gentleman also know how to relax. Loafers or boat shoes, slacks and fine denim, polo shirts and cashmere sweaters are all articles in which you should invest. Wear shorts and short-sleeved button up shirts sparingly.

9. Details: Pockets squares are important, as are cufflinks. You can wear suspenders occasionally. A hat is also an option. These details really help you to individualize your style, should you feel the need.

Now that you know what you need, start shopping. This doesn't have to be an expensive endeavor; you may be able to find some of these items second-hand, or in the closet of your father or uncle (as any gentleman knows, the best styles never die). Go ahead, and most importantly, remember that a gentleman, though he may seem prim and proper, always knows when to loosen his tie and have fun.
