What is a Tux and When Should You Wear It?
A tux is a formal piece of menswear worn by guys for special events such as proms and weddings. These are the two major times in a man's life where he'll need to wear what some refer to as the penguin suit. But, depending on what type of social circles you travel in, there may be other times when you'll need to wear a tux. You may be invited to a dinner or other event that requires a certain type of dress. If you don't know what the invite means when it states the type of dress, you could arrive either dressed too formal or not formal enough.
Let's say you get an invitation to a Black Tie event. This means that formal clothing is necessary. For guys this means you're going to need to wear a tux. For ladies, cocktail long dresses or dressy evening separates are appropriate. An invite that says formal also usually means a tux for the guys, but in some cities it could simply mean a black shirt with a tux but no tie.
A White Tie invite means that the event is ultra formal. Men must wear full dress with a tux, a white tie, vest and crisp shirt. Women usually wear long gowns to White Tie events. Black Tie Optional, sometimes called Black Tie Invited, gives you the option of wearing a tux. If you choose not to wear one, you should wear a dark suit and a tie. Creative Black Tie means you can wear a more modern interpretation of a tux, possibly with a black shirt and no tie.
A semi-formal or After Five event means that you can wear a tux, but it's not required. If you're a guest at an evening wedding, you should wear dark suits. The same holds for daytime semi-formal events. Ladies can wear dressy suits or cocktail dresses or even long dresses.
You never wear a tux to any invite where it says it's Business Formal. This means that you should dress the same as you would for a semi-formal even where you would wear a tailored dark suit. For ladies, Business Formal means something a little bit different. Women should wear more tailored suits or dresses and stay away from anything too sexy or slinky.
Cocktail Attire doesn't require wearing a tux, but you should wear a well-fitted, tailored dark suit. Informal is not the same as casual, but it means you don't need to wear a tux. Dark suits work fine for informal events, especially if you're the guest of an informal wedding. Women can wear short dresses. Casual means anything goes while Dressy Casual means you can wear casual clothes, but you need to look a little more polished. For guys his means slacks and a sportcoat. Women can wear dressy pants. T-shirts, jeans and shorts should not be worn to any event where the invite says Dressy Casual.
For the average person, most events you'll be going to will be somewhere between Semi-formal and Casual. If you're a guest and you're a guy, you probably won't need to wear a tux to any of these events.
