NFL Tickets - Bradford Will Be Top Pick
After completing his pro day workout, it's clear that Sam Bradford will be the number one pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, even if the St. Louis Rams aren't ready to admit it yet. Bradford wowed scouts and NFL executives in attendance with his accuracy, footwork and overall package. Perhaps more importantly, he quelled any concerns about his surgically-repaired shoulder. Bradford made all the throws, completing 62 of his 63 attempts, the only miss being a dropped ball. He showed that his shoulder is healthy by throwing deep routes with ease and impressed everyone in Norman.
The Rams have already said that they won't make a decision on Bradford until they get a personal workout form him at their facility, but that's more of a formality than anything else. They don't have to make an official decision now, so why would they? Still, I would be shocked if Bradford wasn't the guy whose name we hear called first on draft night.
Bradford might have been the top pick in the 2009 draft had he decided to come out of college after his sophomore season. He was coming off a Heisman Trophy and a huge offensive season, and a lot of people think the Detroit Lions would have opted for him over eventual number one pick Matthew Stafford. Bradford barely played for OU last season, though, due to an injured shoulder. Some scouts attributed the severity of the injury to Bradford's slight frame, but the former Sooner has noticeably bulked up and in doing so has probably eased those concerns.
Selecting Bradford first overall comes with some risk, but it's the play to make for St. Louis. While defensive tackles like Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy, and perhaps even safety Eric Berry, could be better overall prospects at their respective positions, they don't make as much sense at number one. Bradford is not a can't-miss prospect, but it's more financially responsible to spend what it takes to sign a number one pick on a quarterback.
The Rams need a quarterback; they have for several seasons now. The team passed on Matt Ryan in 2008 and on Mark Sanchez last season; they can't afford to make the same mistake for a third consecutive year. They drafted Jason Smith last year with the second overall pick to be their franchise left tackle, and now they need the guy that Smith is going to protect. A few scouts favor Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen, but the majority of the NFL world considers Bradford the consensus number one signal caller in this draft class. He's a much safer pick than Clausen and possesses a lot of qualities that the modern NFL looks for in a quarterback, namely throwing accuracy and a high mental acumen.
There are some rumors floating around that Bradford could look to angle his way to the Washington Redskins, who hold the fourth overall pick in the draft, in similar fashion to how Eli Manning made his way from San Diego to New York in 2004. Bradford's agents, the same men that represent the youngest Manning brother, could look to orchestrate a deal in which Bradford becomes a Redskin instead of a Ram.
I'm not so sure Bradford has the sense of entitlement that is required for a player to make such a bold move, and that's another reason that I like him. However, the situation in Washington does look at lot better than it does in St. Louis. The Rams are currently a bit of an unstable franchise, while the Redskins, despite struggling last season, have a new quarterback-friendly coach in Mike Shanahan and an owner with deep pockets in Daniel Snyder.
Even if Bradford tries to force his way to Washington, a scenario which I still deem unlikely at this point, he's going to be the number one pick. He's got a ton of talent, and every team can see his vast potential to win games and sell NFL tickets. Bradford projects as an accurate, smart quarterback with a quiet confidence and good character, which sounds like a recipe for success in today's NFL.
