The Presence of the Spirit and Psalm 139
1 O LORD, You have searched me and known me.
2 You know my sitting down and my rising up;
You understand my thought afar off.
3 You comprehend my path and my lying down,
And are acquainted with all my ways.
4 For there is not a word on my tongue,
But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.
5 You have hedged me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is high, I cannot attain it.
7 Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
8 If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,”
Even the night shall be light about me;
12 Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,
But the night shines as the day;
The darkness and the light are both alike to You.
13 For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.
17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
18 If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
When I awake, I am still with You.
19 Oh, that You would slay the wicked, O God!
Depart from me, therefore, you bloodthirsty men.
20 For they speak against You wickedly;
Your enemies take Your name in vain.
21 Do I not hate them, O LORD, who hate You?
And do I not loathe those who rise up against You?
22 I hate them with perfect hatred;
I count them my enemies.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
24 And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.
David is speaking about the presence of the Holy Spirit throughout this psalm.
Verse 11 and 12 says:
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall[on me,”
Even the night shall be light about me;
12 Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,
But the night shines as the day;
The darkness and the light are both alike to You.
This is a key in that there is a light that is separate from the light as we normally understand it. The night shines as day. This is the light of the Spirit.
This is why there is always the need to ask for light from the Holy Spirit. In a sense, we are in the dark on any number of things or just lack the fullness of light.
Even within the brightness of the sun in the middle of day, there might be a type of darkness that needs the light spoken of in this psalm.
This goes also to the call to individual prayer as well as jointly praying with others. A person needs the light of the Holy Spirit individually in directing there own personal circumstances and this becomes a matter of personal prayer. No matter how much light you have from sunlight, moonlight, starlight or electrically generated light, you also need light from the Holy Spirit. This is why when grappling with issues, there is the need to ask for light on them from the Holy Spirit who can give this provision of light.
Just as a forest needs the sunlight to thrive and even survive, so we also need the light of the Holy Spirit.
It might be that we are in the darkness of maybe sin, but there is also the darkness of not knowing, the darkness of only having some much means at our disposal and then from there we can go no further.
Someone might say that I’m in the dark as to what to do with the day and they are only half jesting. Then people might turn off the light on important areas of their life until they reach other goals and this is a form of darkness maybe as well, where the need is for the Spirit to bring light back to other areas of concern that should be tended to now. There is a partial light and there needs to be more light or the fullness of light so that the Spirit can search for us into areas of our lives that are not fully bloomed as they could be.
If you are trying to read a newspaper at night and you look for a light to read with, it is you who needs the light for the purpose of reading the newspaper. Light is needed.
When it says in this psalm, “ even the night shall be light about me,” these words are talking specifically about the light of the Spirit.
Verses 9 and 10 say:
9 If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.
This goes into a second major point about this psalm. David here is talking about his own infusion with the Holy Spirit. By saying in verse 9 “ If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,” he is describing the Holy Spirit as within him.
The “ wings of the morning,” is a clear reference to the dove of the spirit as described by David in psalm 55. Obviously in human terms he could not take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, but with the infusion of the Holy Spirit he can in the spiritual realm for example intercede for the uttermost parts of the sea in prayer and go with the Spirit in prayer to the uttermost parts. Verse 10 refers to the right had that hold and leads David, the hand of the Spirit.
These verses foreshadow the gift of the Holy Spirit beginning within the nascent church of the New Testament in the Acts of the Apostles.
Verse 5 says,”
“You have hedged me behind and before,
and laid Your hand upon me.”
In the New Testament, the gift of the Holy Spirit was imparted by the laying on of hands in the Acts of the Apostles.
A third major theme of this psalm is salvation.
Verses 17 and 18 say:
17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
18 If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
When I awake, I am still with You.
It talks about the sands of the shore in a number of points in the Bible and this is talking really about unlimited blessings from the Lord as he used this image in the conversation with Abraham in discussing blessings that would be towards Abraham but that would also extend beyond his lifetime.
Genesis 32:12
But you have said, 'I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.
At the end of psalm 16 David also uses the image of “when I awake” to talk about being in the eternal presence of the Lord.
It wouldn’t make sense that the Lord would have that many thoughts about someone, for this temporal life. It would take more than a lifetime to count the sands of the shores if you did it one by one.
Would the Lord infuse David with the Holy Spirit for temporal reasons only or wouldn’t be more logical that this was an eternal journey?
That the Lord is thinking about him is something David is grateful for and this goes into the earlier verses of the psalm where he speaks of the Lord’s workmanship for him including in fashioning days for him and in forming his physical being.
There is foreknowledge to this; the Spirit has the picture of the future in place that couldn’t otherwise be available. When is says in the psalm that you hedged me behind and before, this is concurrently talking about in the past and in the future indicating foreknowledge to David's life. He cannot attain the knowledge because he does not know the future nor the distant past nor all of the inner workings of the prssent. Indeed while the Lord is hedging also the future for him, he himself does not havc foreknowledge of the future.
You might say, thank you Lord for the work you put into this for me and thank you for the thought you put into this for me and both prayers are on a similar plain.
The final verse of this psalm also refers to salvation. Verse 22 says,
” 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.
David doesn’t want anything wicked to compromise or hinder his walk to salvation. He speaks of the way everlasting which has begun when the Lord fashioned his days and continues for him into the way everlasting.
